2008 FCCLA Convention - Pics

Written by Hather Jensen and Brittney Quist
He represented the Hurley FCCLA Chapter at this year’s State FCCLA meeting held at the Oaks and Ramkota Hotels in Sioux Falls. Brittney, Heather and Mrs.Stratmeyer enjoyed attending the meetings and workshops. The girls presented their illustrated talk on cyber bullying. They received a 97.5, which qualifies them for a Superior rating. Besides their talk, each of the two girls had their own responsibilities, Brittney was the voting delegate and Heather served as a timekeeper. Mrs.Stratmeyer, as an advisor, served as a room consultant for illustrated talks.

Science Fair Results

Submitted by Mr. McKenney
The Hurley Science Fair took place Wednesday March, 5 in the Hurley Small Gym. This year there were some challenging projects tackeled by the Hurley Junior High. Projects ranged from taste testing to food decomposition in the Biology Division. In the Chemistry Division students learned about how metals like copper are oxidized as well as sugars get dehydrated. The Physics Division was filled with the most projects addressing the idea of propeller theory, to wing disign, to simple siphon action. The most interesting was the reconstruction of the “Roman Arch.” I think the students were surprised along with
parents on how something so simple is so strong and practical.
I would like to thank all of the parents for their support of the students during this busy time of year. I would like to extend a congratulations to the winners and for those who have made the commitment of making the trip to SDSU for the Regional Science Fair.
Finally the judges who selflessly volunteered their time they include Kelli, Tirsta, Megan, Caitlin, and Katie. I conclude this as a successful year thanks in part to you individuals, as useful suggestions were given to improve these projects and students.
