On Thursday, November 13th, the 8th grade FACS class took a field trip to the Buckle, Plato’s Closet, and Hancock Fabric. Kelsey Knutson, Reece Gordon, Tyler Paetow, and Collin Sherard were able to get hands on experience in applying information learned during class time. The class is studying a clothing unit which includes purchasing clothing as well as sewing.
Students have been learning about a variety of areas in clothing selection from color coordination, budgeting, shopping, and clothing care. The next part of the unit will be learning some basic sewing skills and a sewing project.

The All-State Chorus and Orchestra Concert was held at the Sioux Falls Arena on November 1, 2008.
Mrs. Waltner accompanied the Hurley students to this event.
The chorus sang 9 songs, including the Star Spangled Banner, and two others accompanied by the orchestra. It was a wonderful concert, and a great experience!

The Hurley Music Department congratulates Laura Ebbesen on being selected to participate in both the Region 1 Honor Band (on Alto Saxophone) and the Junior Honors Choir, held in Rapid City this year. Participants for both activities were selected from taped auditions from students in South Dakota. The Region 1 Honor Band is for students only in Region 1, and the Jr. Honors Choir is for students all across the state of South Dakota. Only 176 students were chosen for the mixed and women’s choirs out of 508 auditions.
The Region 1 Honor Band concert will be held at the Yankton High School on Monday, November 24, 2008 at 7:00 pm. The Junior Honors Choir concert will be held on Saturday, January 17 @ 2:00 pm at Dakota Middle School, 601 Columbus, in Rapid City, SD. A $5.00 admission fee will be charged.

The FCCLA members provided a community service during conferences by offering babysitting in the teachers lounge. Children could play games or color with the FCCLA members while parents attended conferences. Free will donations were accepted to help with future FCCLA projects. Thankyou to families who brought their children to the babysitting.

Congratulations to the Hurley/Marions Cobras in their First Round Win. They will be playing Emory/Ethan in Hurley on Monday, November 3rd. KMIT or KOOL 98 (which is 95.9 FM) out of Mitchell will be airing the game. Game time is 7:30 PM.

On October 5th and 6th, FCCLA president Tracy Heirigs and Vice President Allison Sherard along with their adviser, Mrs. Stratmeyer attended the State FCCLA leadership training in Huron. Approximately 230 FCCLA members from 22 FCCLA chapters across the state attended the “2008 FCCLA Boot Camp: WE WANT YOU!” workshops. The sessions began on Sunday evening and continued from 8:30 to 3:30 Monday.
